Lab-grown vs natural diamonds

Lab-grown and natural diamonds look identical and are the same material, yet they are priced worlds apart. This guide explains what actually differs, what you give up and gain with each, and how the choice changes the cost of an engagement ring.

How each diamond is made

Natural diamonds formed under heat and pressure deep in the earth over billions of years and are mined. Lab-grown diamonds are grown in weeks using either high pressure–high temperature (HPHT) presses or chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which builds carbon atom by atom on a diamond seed. Both processes produce true diamond crystal.

Appearance and durability

Graded the same, a lab and a natural diamond are indistinguishable to the eye. Both score 10 on hardness, both are graded on the same 4Cs, and both carry reports from labs such as GIA and IGI. Cut quality, not origin, determines how much a stone sparkles.

The price difference

Origin is now the single largest price variable in a ring. A natural one-carat round in good grades can cost several times its lab-grown equivalent, and the gap grows with carat weight. That is why many couples use lab-grown to move up a full carat size or into top color and clarity grades for the same spend.

Resale value and rarity

Neither type is a financial investment, but natural diamonds keep a secondary market and a sense of rarity. Lab-grown supply is effectively unlimited and prices keep falling, so a lab stone should be bought purely for how it looks and what it means, not for what it might resell for.

Ethics and sourcing

Lab-grown diamonds avoid mining, though growing them uses significant energy. Natural diamonds can be responsibly sourced through the Kimberley Process and traceable-origin programs. Ask any seller for documentation either way.

The True Carat price curves plot natural and lab-grown prices side by side across carat weights, and the ring calculator lets you switch origin with one tap to see the full ring estimate, the 3D CAD model and a PDF breakdown change instantly.

Common questions

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is crystallised carbon with the same chemical composition, hardness (10 on the Mohs scale) and optical properties as a mined diamond. It is not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite.

Can you tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one?

Not with the naked eye or a jeweler's loupe. Distinguishing them requires specialised lab equipment that detects growth patterns and trace elements. Grading reports from GIA and IGI state the origin, and lab stones are usually laser-inscribed on the girdle.

How much cheaper are lab-grown diamonds than natural?

For the same carat, cut, color and clarity, lab-grown diamonds commonly cost a large fraction less than natural stones — often 70% to 90% less at one carat and above, and the gap has widened as production has scaled.

Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?

Generally no. Lab-grown prices have fallen steadily and resale demand is weak. Natural diamonds also resell below retail, but retain meaningfully more value. If resale matters to you, natural is the safer choice.

Will a lab-grown diamond get cloudy or change over time?

No. A lab-grown diamond is as durable and stable as a natural one. Any cloudiness in either type comes from dirt, oils or inclusions present from the start, not from ageing.
