One carat is the most-searched diamond size in the US. Its price can range from well under a thousand dollars to over ten thousand depending on origin and grades. Here is what drives the number.
A lab-grown 1 carat diamond typically costs a small fraction of a natural one with the same grades. Both look identical; the difference is rarity and resale.
Prices per carat step up at popular weights. A 0.95 ct stone looks the same size as a 1.00 ct but can cost noticeably less.
Moving from D to H color or from VVS1 to SI1 clarity can cut the price by a third or more without a visible difference. Cut is the grade that most affects how the stone actually looks.
Round brilliants cost the most per carat. Ovals, cushions and emeralds of the same weight are usually less expensive, and ovals look larger face-up.
