Shape sets the outline and how much rough is wasted in cutting — it can swing price 20% at the same weight.
Round Brilliant: The most in-demand shape and the most brilliant. You pay a premium because more rough is lost in cutting.
Price rises far faster than weight, and jumps at round numbers. Buying 1.90ct instead of 2.00ct can save thousands for a difference nobody can see.
The only 'C' made by human hands, and the one that decides whether the stone throws light.
Ideal / Excellent: Light enters and returns straight to your eye. Cut is the single biggest driver of sparkle — never economise here.
Graded D (colourless) to Z. Most people cannot see a difference within two grades.
G: Near-colourless sweet spot: faces up white in every metal.
What matters is whether inclusions are visible to the naked eye — not the letters on the report.
VS1: Eye-clean with a comfortable margin. The value-conscious favourite.
Lab-grown stones grade identically and cost a fraction, but hold little resale value.
Natural: Mined stone with resale history and traditional prestige.
Extra diamonds and handwork in the setting often add more than a full colour grade would.
Solitaire: One stone, clean shank. Timeless and the least expensive setting.
Metal choice is about weight, upkeep and how white the diamond faces up.
14k White Gold: Bright and crisp; the rhodium plating needs refreshing every few years.
Wider shanks use more metal — noticeable in platinum, where metal is the bulk of the setting cost.

Engagement ring pricing
Carat has the largest effect because bigger gem-quality diamonds are rarer and prices jump near milestone weights. Cut, color, clarity, origin and shape then adjust that base price.
Solitaire settings use less labor than halos, pavé or three-stone designs. Platinum, gold purity, band width and accent diamonds also change the finished ring estimate.
Protect cut quality first, then compare eye-clean clarity and near-colorless grades. Review the diamond education guide or use the diamond price calculator to compare trade-offs.
