Diamond clarity: pay for what your eye can see

Clarity grades describe inclusions and surface characteristics observed by a trained grader under 10× magnification. The grade considers size, number, position, nature and relief—not simply whether a diamond has an inclusion.

How clarity is graded

The scale runs from Flawless and Internally Flawless through VVS, VS, SI and Included grades. Graders examine the loose stone under magnification, which means many characteristics that affect the report are invisible at normal viewing distance. A centrally placed dark crystal can be more noticeable than several pale inclusions near the girdle, even within the same grade.

What eye-clean really means

Eye-clean is a practical description, not an official laboratory grade. It depends on viewing distance, lighting, eyesight, diamond size and facet pattern. Brilliant cuts can disguise small inclusions with sparkle; emerald cuts reveal more through their open facets. Ask where inclusions sit and whether they affect transparency or durability, not only which letters appear on the report.

Clarity and engagement ring cost

Prices rise sharply in VVS and Flawless grades because those stones are rarer, although the difference is usually microscopic. For a ring worn daily, a clean-looking VS1 or VS2 often offers the same visible result. SI grades require more individual inspection, especially in larger stones and step cuts, but can provide substantial value.

Common questions

Is VS2 clarity good for an engagement ring?

Yes. Many VS2 diamonds are eye-clean and offer a strong balance between appearance and cost, though every stone and inclusion plot should be reviewed individually.

Is SI1 clarity eye-clean?

Some SI1 diamonds are eye-clean and others are not. Size, shape, inclusion location and contrast determine the result, so images or an in-person inspection matter.

Does clarity affect sparkle?

Most small inclusions do not. Heavy inclusions or reduced transparency can affect brilliance, but cut quality is normally the stronger driver of sparkle.
